Open die forging process typically involves the following steps:
1. Heating: The workpiece is heated to a temperature between 1650 and 2200 degrees Fahrenheit (900 and 1200 degrees Celsius). This temperature range is known as the “plastic range” because the metal is soft and malleable enough to be shaped without cracking or breaking.
2. Positioning: The heated workpiece is placed on the anvil or lower die. The hammer or press is then positioned over the workpiece, and the forging process begins.
3. Hammering or pressing: The hammer is struck repeatedly, or the press is applied, to deform the workpiece into the desired shape. The hammer or press operator uses a variety of techniques to control the flow of metal and create the desired shape
4. Trimming: Once the workpiece has been forged to the desired shape, any excess metal is trimmed off using a trimming tool.
5. Heat treatment: If necessary, the workpiece may be heat treated to improve its strength, toughness, or other properties.
