What is EDM ?
- Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), also known as spark machining, spark eroding, die sinking, wire burning, or wire erosion, is a non-traditional machining process that uses electrical discharges (sparks) to remove material from a workpiece.
- This process is used to create complex shapes and features in hard materials that would be difficult to machine with traditional methods.
EDM process
EDM is a powerful and versatile machining process that can be used to create complex shapes and features in a wide variety of materials. However, it is important to note that EDM is a relatively slow and expensive machining process. It is also important to use the correct type of electrode and dielectric fluid for the material being machined
In an EDM machine, a tool electrode is placed in close proximity to the workpiece. A dielectric fluid is used to fill the gap between the tool electrode and the workpiece. The dielectric fluid serves three main purposes:
1. Insulate the tool electrode and workpiece from each other: This prevents a continuous electrical arc from forming between the tool and the workpiece.
2. Cool the tool electrode and workpiece: This prevents them from overheating and melting
3. Flush away debris: The dielectric fluid flushes away debris from the gap between the tool electrode and workpiece, ensuring that the gap remains clear.
When an electrical potential difference is applied between the tool electrode and the workpiece, an electrical discharge occurs across the gap. This discharge ionizes the dielectric fluid and creates a plasma channel.
The plasma channel is extremely hot, and it vaporizes a small amount of material from the workpiece. This material is then flushed away by the dielectric fluid. The EDM process is repeated over and over again, gradually removing material from the workpiece until the desired shape is achieved.
